Aldo de Luca

Professor Emeritus, University of Naples Federico II

Aldo de Luca (born November 30, 1941) is an Italian computer scientist, physicist, mathematician, and professor emeritus of Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Naples Federico II.

He had the degree in Physics cum laude at the University of Naples Federico II in 1964, the specialization diploma in Theoretical Physics cum laude in 1967, and the qualification for University teaching (libera Docenza) in Cybernetics and Information Theory in 1971.

From 1968 to 1973 he was charged professor of Cybernetics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Naples and from 1973 to 1980 charged professor of Automata Theory at Faculty of Science of the University of Salerno. He was full professor of Algebra and Higher Algebra at the University of Naples Federico II from 1980 to 1985 and full professor of Theoretical Computer Science at the Faculty of Science of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" from 1986 to 2003 and at the Faculty of Science of the University of Naples Federico II from 2003 to 2010. From 1999 to 2002 he was detached at the Interdisciplinary center "B. Segre" of the national Academy of Lincei. He was researcher of National Research Council (C.N.R.) from 1967 to 1980 at the Institute of Cybernetics "E.R. Caianiello" of Arco Felice (Naples).

He was the principal investigator of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" of European research projects (ASMICS EBRA,1990-92 and ASMICS 2 EBRA, 1992-95), national projects (COFIN projects), and several Faculty or University projects.

The research interests were, and are, in Theoretical Computer Science and in particular in Combinatorics on Words, Theory of Automata, Formal Languages, and Information Theory. The results of his research have been published in more than 120 articles in professional International Journals, and in several other papers in volumes or in the Proceedings of international and national meetings.

He was advisor of several Ph.D theses in Italy and in foreign countries. He is member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Algebra and Computation; he was from 1982 to 1994 member of the scientific council of Laboratoire d'Informatique Théorique et Programmation of the University of Paris 7; he was member of the scientific and steering committee of numerous international conferences; he was invited from various prestigious institutions (International Science Foundation, FCAR (Canada), NSERC (Canada), Academy of Finland, CNR) to evaluate the scientific quality of several research projects; he was idoneus to the charge of Director of the Institute "Mauro Picone" of CNR.

He was invited from various Universities (Budapest, Szeged, Parigi VI e VII, Rouen, Sao Paulo, Marne-la-Vallée, Turku, Montreal) to give cycles of lectures and seminars or for scientific collaboration. He was invited to give conferences to National Academy of Lincei (1982), to University of Moscow in occasion of 100th birthday of P. S. Novikov (2002), University of S. Petersburg for the 300th birthday of L. Euler (2007). A special issue of the Journal Theoretical Informatics and Applications (vol. 35, 2001) (A tribute to Aldo de Luca) in occasion of his 60th birthday has been published.

He is member of the Academy of Mathematical and Physical Sciences of Naples.
